ST. LOUIS (September 28, 2025) — While NHRA sophomore Funny Car driver Buddy Hull is still out of the Jim Dunn Racing driver’s seat recovering from a left-hand injury, Alex Laughlin filled in for him this weekend at the NAPA Auto Parts NHRA Midwest Nationals. Hull stayed busy at World Wide Technology Raceway, entertaining fans and promoting the upcoming episode of his hit TV show, Talkin’ Funny Cars with Buddy Hull.
“It’s important to me to still show up, even if my hand is still too injured to compete,” said Hull. “The Jim Dunn Racing team works so hard, and we have fantastic sponsors like Menards, who I love to represent. This facility in St. Louis is fantastic, both for the drivers and fans, and I’m lucky to get to see it from both sides.”
In between qualifying rounds, Hull could be seen signing autographs and taking photos with fans out of the Jim Dunn Racing pits. During the qualifying action, Hull was up on the roof of the tower, observing the competition to stay sharp for when he is medically cleared to get back in the car.

“I am always watching what the other drivers in our class are doing,” said Hull. “I like to know their habits, their procedures, everything. That way when I’m lined up next to them, I know what to expect.”
This week, season two, episode four of Talkin’ Funny Cars with Buddy Hull will air on the NHRA FAST Channel. This episode features SCAG Racing BlueBird Turf driver Dave Richards. The episode delves into what its like racing as a larger guy, how Richards gets to race with his brother and what it’s like having a supportive sponsor in your corner. The episode will air on Wednesday, October 1 at 8 p.m. ET and 8 p.m. PT. Fans can watch the show on 13 different platforms, including the Roku Channel (USA & Canada), Tubi, Samsung TV Plus, Sling Freestream and others. Search NHRA and click on the LIVE option.
“This Dave Richards episode is long overdue,” said Hull. “I always enjoy chatting with Dave and I am excited that the NHRA fan base will get to learn even more about another cool dude in the Funny Car class. I’m fortunate that even when I am not actively racing, I’m still able to push the Funny Car class forward.”
Laughlin, competing on Hull’s behalf, qualified in the No. 15 position after making two strong passes during qualifying, the best of which coming during Q1, a 4.049 second, 315.86 mph run. In the first round of eliminations, he was up against eventual race winner, Matt Hagan, who outran him despite Laughlin making another solid pass.
Hull and Jim Dunn Racing will keep fans updated as they evaluate his medical status going into the Stampede of Speed and Texas NHRA Fall Nationals on October 8-12 at Texas Motorplex. For tickets or more information on the Texas NHRA Fall Nationals visit stampedeofspeed.com.
