JOLIET, Ill. (May 18, 2025) – Mason Wright got the best of J.R. Gray in the final round of the Congruity NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series on Sunday at Route 66 Raceway, claiming his first victory of the season as part of this weekend’s 25th annual Gerber Collision & Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by PEAK.
It was the fourth of 10 races during the 2025 Congruity NHRA Pro Mod season and this weekend’s event was powered by Flying H Drag Strip in Odessa, Mo.
Wright earned his second career win in the NHRA Pro Mod ranks, clinching the victory when Gray went red in the final round. Wright, though, would have been tough to beat, laying down a solid run of 5.734-seconds at 251.25 mph in his Chevrolet Camaro. It was the icing on top of a terrific weekend for Wright, who qualified No. 1 with a stellar 5.676 at 253.66 and had a remarkably consistent car during eliminations.
He defeated Chip King, Mike Stavrinos and Ken Quartuccio to reach the final round, staying in the low 5.70s to pick up his first win of the season. At the last three races in the category, the No. 1 qualifier has gone on to win the race.
“You can’t take any of these teams lightly. The team carried me the whole way (today),” said Wright, who moved to fifth in points. “I did not do my job on the starting line on any pass and the team deserves all of this. They won this race and this is all for them. But you can’t take anyone out here lightly. We have to come back stronger, but it’s awesome to have a team like we do.”
To reach the final round for the second time this season, Gray, who won last month in Charlotte, knocked off Derek Menholt, Billy Banaka and Kevin Rivenbark.
Gray also moved into the points lead with his strong weekend, with teammate Mike Stavrinos in second. Rickie Smith is third.
The Congruity NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series returns to action June 6-8 as part of the Super Grip NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway in Bristol, Tenn.
