For Immediate Release
(Perris, CA, May 22, 2024) It will be a busy night of racing when Perris Auto Speedway hosts the 71st running of the Salute to Indy this Saturday night, May 25th. Joining the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars will be the PASSCAR Super Stocks, Street Stocks, GAS Chassis Young Gun Sprints, and The PAS Senior Sprints. Spectator gates for the night of dirt track racing thrills and clean family fun will open at 5:00 PM, and the first green flag will start racing at 7:00.
Saturday will mark the third appearance of the season for the super stocks. Some bad news for all the competitors in the class is that Billy Griffin, a driver with four PAS track championships on his resume, has won the first two races. Those triumphs have the Buena Park veteran staked to a four-point lead over three-time PAS titlist Chuck Becker of Yucaipa. Becker has a second and a fourth in the first two races. The defending class champion, Ricky Lee of Beaumont, is only six points behind the leader after beginning his season with second and third-place results.
Things in the super stocks class promise to be a bit tougher on Saturday as two drivers will be making their class debut. Multi-time street stock winner Shawn Estes of Riverside and Yorba Linda’s Chad Mahony will jump up a class to race super stocks owned by Dennis and Shelly Wooldridge. Both drivers will be doing double duty, as they will also compete in their regular rides in the street stocks.
Speaking of Estes, he won the last street stock race on March 16th. However, a DNF in the season opener leaves him 16 points behind the co-point leaders Evan Sennett of Riverside and Lake Elsinore’s James Altman. Altman won the year’s first race with Ohio native Sennett second. In the second race, past champion Brandon Kelly of Moreno placed second to Estes with Altman third and Sennett fourth.
If the first two street stock races are any indication, the fight for the 2024 title may come down to the final checkered flag in November. Sennett and Altman are only four points ahead of third-place driver George Leventis of Rancho Palos Verdes. Teen driver Cameron Pierce of Lake Matthews is just six points out of first and two-time defending champion Chris Leventis is only eight behind the leader.
A new face will join the GAS Chassis Young Gun Sprints for the second race in a row. Seth Dyer, a 17-year-old from Yucca Valley who is currently fourth in points in the California Lightning Sprint Car Series, will be making his 2024 Young Gun debut. Dyer, the son of USAC/CRA driver and California Highway Patrol Officer Jeff Dyer, made one start in the Young Guns last season and placed fifth in the main event. At the last Young Gun race in April, first-timer Jake McKee of Redlands won over points leader Brecken Guerrero of Westminster.
Also on hand on Saturday will be the Senior Sprint Cars. Bob Suchy of Tustin has won the first three races of the senior season.
